The 2009 Barry Sheene Festival of Speed reached new heights this weekend at the Eastern Creek International Raceway.  With the inclusion of racing champions Kork Ballington & Graeme Crosby, the weekend had a distinctly international flavour. Added to this was multiple Australian Superbike Champion Robbie Phillis, who shared factory rides with  both Crosby & Ballington at the Suzuka 8 hour.  Needless to say, Garage 8 proved to be a huge success with both ex-riders and fans coming in to have a chat.

On the racing side of things, Robbie Phillis on the Mick Horne Suzuki GSX1100 proved that he is still the person to beat, winning the inaugural Barry Sheene memorial feature race comprising of the fastest 40 riders on pre-1980 bikes ahead of Rex Wolfenden on his T-Rex Honda and Craig Morris on a Suzuki RG500. The evergreen Bill Newton showed that he hasn’t lost his touch by taking out the Ken Lucas Championship Challenge, beating a much younger Ken Wootten with Robert Dunston finishing third.

With a race programme of over two hundred & seventy bikes, each race was well subscribed, providing plenty of action for the large crowd of spectators.

Off the track, Sunday’s Show & Shine was a keenly contested affair with over 70 bikes competing in a wide variety of classes including an immaculate Egli Honda CBX1000 winning best Café Racer. 

Other activities over the weekend included the motorcycle only swap meet & a wide variety of club stands & trader displays providing something for everyone.
